Related to his fightingmanly spirit Zoro has many scars on his body. This makes sense given what we know of Mihawks tough training style and his immense power and Zoros stubbornness.
It is only observed that the scar has caused some major damage to his eye.
Roronoa zoro lost his eye. He also has a new scar over his left eye which he has closed. So for now we have only this much information about his eye. It is currently unknown how he acquired it.
The only fact that is almost certain is that it must have happened in. How he acquired it is unknown. Nothing has been set in stone but its still a little hard to believe how none of the Straw Hats asked about it yet not even Luffy and his childlike curiosity.

Many times he has suffered injuries which would kill a normal person and muscled through them through sheer willpower such as when he was given his gaping scar which he allowed to be inflicted on himself deliberately and when he absorbed all of Luffys pain from his fight with Gecko Moriah after Bartholomew Kuma pushed it out of him and made Zoro take it upon himself in. Yet Eichiiro sensei hasnt really revealed all of the Strawhat Crews power so we cant say anything.
